Broadcast: news Weigel Broadcasting
Weigel added live same-language captions across its regional news stations, helping it meet FCC caption requirements without standing up a human captioning team.
The story
ASR into the encoder they already own
Weigel Broadcasting runs local broadcast stations that have captioned news the traditional way for years: court reporters writing to a hardware caption encoder.
The challenge
Weigel wanted to reduce the cost of human captioning without touching its on-prem infrastructure. Whatever generated the captions had to be fast enough to feed the station's existing hardware encoder and land cleanly in the live SDI feed.
The solution
Program audio leaves the SDI chain through an SDI-to-SRT converter and streams to SyncWords. Live ASR captions return over IP to the station's existing caption encoder, which inserts them into the broadcast, on main and backup channels.
The result
Lower captioning costs with no change to hardware or workflow, caption quality the stations are happy with, and plans to add more channels.
