Why a German hockey team on a North American channel
The LA Kings and Eisbären Berlin share an owner, AEG Sports. That connection made Eisbären games a natural fit for SLVR Sports & Entertainment, a channel programmed with Kings content. Eisbären Berlin plays in the DEL, Germany's top hockey league, and the club's broadcasts carry German commentary. SLVR's audience is in North America.
Showing the games with German commentary would leave most of that audience outside the action. So the question was how to give them the game in English.
The challenge: live hockey doesn't wait
Hockey commentary is fast. Play turns over in seconds, player names come from many countries, and fans expect to follow the game as it happens, not afterwards. Two obvious answers didn't fit:
- A replay with English commentary added later would miss the point of live sport.
- A second, English-speaking commentary team for every game wasn't practical across a full season.
The Kings wanted English-language coverage of Eisbären games that went out live, alongside the Kings' own broadcasts.
The solution: live AI dubbing into English
The German-language game feed arrives at SyncWords live. SyncWords live AI dubbing then does three things in one pass:
